Generally Well Tolerated.

BACKGROUND

L-Theanineis an amino acid found in green tea, that was first isolated in 1950 inJapan. It’s considered the primary compound in green tea responsible for its calming effects. Upon crossing the blood-brain barrier, L-theanine stimulates the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid(GABA), a chemical produced by the brain that blocks excitatory signals that contribute to stress. The pathway that L-theanine follows is similar to that of prescription drugs belonging to the benzodiazepine group (i.e.Xanax, Valium), yet L-theanine is free from unwanted side effects and the risk of addiction.

COGNITIVE FUNCTION

Studies show L-theanine to increase alpha brain wave activity, synonymous with a state of serenity, mental clarity, and the ability to concentrate. In a study of young healthy adults, L-theanine was shown to improve the ability to perform study tests; improved accuracy during task switching and self-reported alertness (bothp<0.01), and reduced self-reported tiredness(p<0.05). In another study, supplementation with L-theanine and green tea was found to significantly increase theta brain waves, a measure of cognitive alertness, in the temporal, frontal, parietal, and occipital areas of the brain, while at the same time improving memory and concentration testing.

STRESS AND ANXIETY

L-Theanine has been shown to improve feelings of mental calmness in the face of stressful tasks, while simultaneously lowering cortisol levels (“the stress hormone”). L-Theanine has been shown to reduce anxiety, as well as positive symptom ratings compared to placebo, among patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders. Lower levels of anxiety and stress will also decrease unnecessary production of the adrenal hormone cortisol, which triggers carbohydrate cravings and accumulation of stubborn belly fat. Supplementation with Vitazan Professional’s L-Theanine can be a valuable asset to promote relaxation and avoid many stress-related health concerns.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

L-Theanine has been shown to be safe and effective in improving sleep quality in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).Supplementation with ʟ? theanine twice daily results in better sleep efficiency (time spent asleep) and less time spent awake after initially falling asleep. L-Theanine was well-tolerated with no adverse events.

BLOOD PRESSURE

Likely associated with its stress-relieving properties, L-theanine has also been shown to lower blood pressure. In response to a stressful task, subjects taking L-theaninehad a smaller spike in blood pressure compared to subjects taking placebo. This was associated with fewer feelings of tension and anxiety.
