What is your body telling you?

what is your body telling you?

what is your body telling you?

Your body works to resetting itself all the time and its sending you messages along the way. Sometimes we disregard them, but if you pay attention , your body signs can give you early clues as to what it may need to help you feel at your best. Here are a few key body symptoms, keeping in mind if you have any, its best to work with your health care team to find the proper approach for you.

1. SCALLOPS ON THE SIDE OF YOUR TONGUE

Did you know that your tongue is a picture of your body, when it comes to Chinese Medicine?  In fact before we had all the modern day technology that we have today, medical practitioners had to rely only on what they observed, what the patient told them and with their examination. Thus areas of the tongue correlate to specific organ systems as below.  Scallops or ridges on the sides of the tongue represent liver or gall bladder imbalance, which may suggest that you need attention in these areas. Luckily today we have tests that can confirm if there are concerns.  Liver Detoxing may be a suggested therapy.  Other signs of imbalances that can be seen on the tongue may  include: a pale tongue, may mean reduced blood pressure, reduced iron or adrenal fatigue; coating in the central area of the tongue may mean poor digestion or immunity and a red tongue tip may mean cardiovascular concerns related to the heart.  So stick your tongue out today and see what your body is telling you!

2. FINGERNAILS

Your fingernails may be a great clue to what’s happening in your health.  When I see patients they are use to placing their hands on the desk, especially kids so we can get some more clues!

The following nail changes may be linked to your health:

  • Brittle & Dry: Thyroid Imbalance, Nutrient Deficiencies:  Vitamins A, B, EFA
  • Split & Dull: Nutrient Deficiencies:  Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Protein
  • Flat or Spooning: Nutrient Deficiencies: Vitamin B12 , Iron
  • Clubbing- Heart ,Lung Imbalances
  • Vertical Ridges: Hormone Imbalance, Protein Deficiency
  • Horizontal Ridges: Stress, Digestion Imbalances
  • Pitted: Trauma, Psoriasis, Autoimmune Disease (Connective Tissue  Disorder, Alopecia), Zinc (pit with line across middle of nail)

So flash those nails to see what they are telling us!

3.CHICKEN SKIN

Yes chicken skin!  Those tiny bumps that can pop up on your cheeks, upper arms, thighs, back and yes your bum!!  This is known as Keratosis Pilaris or (KP) in medical shorthand lingo.  This is a genetic condition (30-50% of cases) where excess skin cells build up around hair follicles, causing hair follicles to become trapped.  KP does get better with age.  KP may also be related to food intolerances and often gets better with avoidance of them.   If you have this consider being tested for food intolerances and or allergies.

4.EAR LOBE CREASE

This little sign is  a good one to watch out for because if you have it research suggests that there can be up to a 75% correlation of coronary heart disease!  and up to an 80% correlation if you have it and you are less than 40 years old!  Ear lobes are more than a pretty place for earrings!!

5.WHERE YOU HOLD YOUR WEIGHT

And lastly, where you hold your weight may tell us about hormone imbalances for example if you are:

  • Gaining Weight All Over: Thyroid Imbalance
  • Gain Weight as Belly Fat: Cortisol & Insulin Imbalance
  • Gaining Weight : Hips, thighs, butt: Estrogen Imbalance
  • Gain Weight in an Hour Glass: Chest and Hips, thighs: Estrogen and Progesterone Imbalance

Eat well, exercise daily and check with your health care team if you notice any of the above!
